Greek Container: Pyxis

A container that Greek women used for keeping small items such as jewelry and cosmetics.

This drinking vessel was often decorated with geometric shapes and was a favorite of Dionysus, the God of Wine.

Greek Vases: Kylix


This vessel was an elegant, highly decorated drinking cup. Decoration was on the outside, and sometimes on the inner part of the cup so that the design would be revealed as the cup was emptied. Decorations included humorous or exciting scenes that might amuse the Greeks.

Carrier of Washing-Water







This vase was used to carry water in such rituals as the bridal bath or wahing a body for a funeral. Decorations were usually of wedding processions or mourners.

Greek Vases: Amphora




In early Greek athletic competetions, winners were sometimes given oil which was stored in large ceramic vessels called "amphoras"

The "Dinos" was often given as a prize during Greek competitions. It is a deep both without handles and a rounded lip. Often a dinos was rounded on the bottom, and needed some sort of stand for support. The dinos was likely decorated with a repeated athletic scene or some sort of animal.
